I got a new printer about a month back. It's a Canon MP970. I put installed the driver for Tiger on my Tiger HD, and it works fine. Everything works 100%. I then put the Leopard driver on my Leopard HD, and it doesn't work at all. When the Printer Utility pops up, the printer name doesn't show up like it did under Tiger. I've reinstalled the driver several times, but still no go. What's up? It sort of pisses me off that an old OS can recognize a brand new printer, but a newer more advanced one can't.

Edit: I wasn't sure if this should have gone in the Consumer Electronics forum, or this one, but I think it's an OS X issue, not the printer itself. Sorry

Have you checked Canon's site for an updated driver?

I don't see a Printer Utility in Leopard. Do you mean the Print & Fax from within System Prefs?

Yes, I have their latest one. And yes, I'm still in the OS 9 days, term-wise

Have you updated Leopard with the latest Security Updater 2008-2 ?

If yes, you are in the same boat as me. The SU "fixed" CUPS, which breaks it completely for many users. I tried a lot of things, no dice.

I just reverted back to pre SU 2008-2, and et voila, printing worked again.
Damn Apple's quality control

Yeah, I do have the latest Security Update, as well as all the other updates. Forgot to mention that. I haven't thought of downgrading to 10.5.1, but you can't really downgrade a security update can you?

No, you can't. I had to roll back TM. Which added more trouble, see here:

Oh, goody. I love how Apple give us Vista Leopard updates that break everything.

Yeah, the Security Update was a bitch. But in all fairness, for most (*NOT* all) users, third party apps (Audi HiJack) were part of the problem.

I don't really have very many third party apps installed on my Leopard drive. Basically all I have installed is Final Cut Express 4, Logic Pro, Final Cut 5, iWork '08, and iLife '08. The only third party app I have is Photoshop CS3. Sucks.

Apple has released an updated version of the Security Fix (version 1.1). Printing works fine on my machine now (although I did replace the pstops binary by hand after installing version 1.0).
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Yep, we're the beta testers for Apple's efforts--that's the main reason why I wait at least a week before installing any Apple updates.

Though when it comes down to it, why are all the printer mfgs not developing their own drivers, rather than relying on CUPS?

They do have their own drivers, but apparently OS X didn't like it.
