Hi all,
I'm trying to backup my iDisk using time machine but it's not possible (unless I'm missing something). I know you can active the sys pref/.mac/idisk/sync, but I have more than one idisk and creating a 10gb file every idisk will be quite taxing on space on my laptop. Is there a tweak to fool time machine so that he actually "thinks" that idisk is a local drive ?
We are more than one person working on the idisks and it happened lately that someone deleted a WHOLE FOLDER on it ...
I don't know if this question was asked before, I did a search and browsed the forum and could not find it, so my apologies if that was already asked/answer
thanks for your input
Daniel

Search in Finder help for information on iDisk syncing and copying the contents of an iDisk to your computer. When synced, TM should back it up.

Why do you want to backup your iDisk ?
In case the Apple servers crash and their backups burn down ?

As he said, somebody made a huge change to the files on the iDisk, losing a bunch of files that were there. Granted, everything on an iDisk should be coming from something that's already on a local machine (the iDisk is really the backup to the local machine), but I guess I can see why he would want to do this.

Hi guys,
We actually use the idisk as a server for file sharing. We have a team in Vancouver, Los Angeles, Toronto and Montreal ... Someone deleted a folder on the idisk ... we then lost all data in there, which REALLY sucks. I guess some people don't read the "are you sure you want to delete this folder, it will be remove permanently" dialogue before pressing the YES button
To avoid any data lost I would have like to get the idisk backup with time machine, so there is always a way of getting the files back if something happens.
I think I'll have to use a program like "silverkeepers" make a copy to my local drive that gets backed up, that way Time machine will include it in the backup.
It's definitely something that Apple should think about.
Thanks for your input

Ah, I understand.
Well, I would think iDisk is NOT meant to really serve in the function you are describing it. Typically, you would serve files read-only, so users can access them, but not change them. For what you are doing, a backup would be a necessary feature.
However, since iDisk can be accessed as a WebDav volume, you should be able to use third party utilities like Synchronize Pro, You Synchronize or ChronoSync to create a backup (mirror) to your local HD, which in turn will be backed up by TM.
