My hard drive died and I had to buy a new one and reinstall everything. After the reinstall, updates were fine, but a week later, software updates won't launch. Mac mail won't launch either. I cleaned the cache with Onyx, but that didn't help. I finally just deleted mac mail and installed Thunderbird -- that fixed the mail problem but not the updates. I am not sure if this is related, but I also tried downloading Soundslides, and the program won't launch either -- any help?

What version of OS X are you using?

If 10.5, download and reinstall the 10.5.2 combo updater. Apple - Support - Downloads - Mac OS X 10.5.2 Combo Update

If it's for an older version, find its latest combo updater, download, and install.

Could be a permissions problem.

Did you run the Disk Utilities - Repair Permissions ?

Cold Warrior: I am using OS X 10.3.9. I tried downloading the combo and it said that it can't be downloaded to my hard drive. No explanation.

Turtle777: I did -- didn't work.

I just realized I don't have any updates... I partitioned my hard drive as journaled -- can that be the problem?

Do the problems still occur if you make a new account and try doing things there? If so, I'm not sure how you went about reinstalling, but it sounds like something most likely went wrong at that stage. You might try an archive-install.
