So I just got leopard

I first installed it on my macbook
no problem

I then installed it on my imac g5

it took the install fine.
had it up and runing

I then decided to give time machine a try
as you know it initially takes a while to back up the files...

So I leave it running while I go to work.
when I return 9 hours later I see a gray screen saying my system crashed
and a whole lot of text saying "panic!...."

I go straight to my install cd the mac came with
it would not do a archive and install.
I tried disk utility to repair any damage
install cd could not repair it

I have now been running disk warrior to rebuild the drive
it has been running for 20 hours now and has about 500+ "speed reduced by malfunction error" message

so is time machine the culprit?
should I keep letting disk warrior run?

Time Machine's not the culprit, it's your hard disk. DiskWarrior does not usually take that long, even with a large drive. Back up what you can and replace the drive.

To clarify:

It's quite possible that the prolonged strain of installation and Spotlight indexing or Time Machine backup finally brought out the hard disk failure that was already happening, but hadn't manifest itself in symptoms you were able to recognize before the installation.

But the software cannot have "caused" a hardware failure.

I have the feeling you are correct

disk warrior eventually finished and said I didnt have enough memory

So I used my macbook to host DW and used target mode to rebuild the imac

DW finished in about 30 min
this MAY have something to do with memory
(RAM)

however it DID say that I had a disk malfunction

luckily for me I am able to get a good amount of info off of the HDD

I was thinking it caused the OS to crash not necessarily a hardware faliure

however DW says the hardware does indeed have an issue

update:
dist utility says the drive is verified
and DW says its has one foot in the grave
to whom shall you put your trust?

anyway what they both agreed on and were unable to repair was the directory
at least disk warrior was able to make a preview so I can get all my important files off.

After backing everything up
I then pull out the install cd and did what i have been trying to avoid for the last four days

I wiped the drive.and reinstalled tiger

wow i almost forgot what itunes 4 looked like

in any case i no longer trust(as much as one can trust a hdd) my hdd anymore and will replace it anyway

hope this post is useful to someone
