I was considering buying a USB drive to store backups on. What file format does the iMac use ? Is it FAT32 or Mac's own file system. Also if I format it to the Apples OS will I be able to use it on a Windows Vista laptop.
The OS is Lepoard BTW

A Time Machine backup must be on an HFS+ formatted volume, the standard Mac OS X format. Windows machines cannot read this without extra software (MacDrive from Mediafour |).

If you need to run it on Mac and Windows use FAT32. There are ways to use NTFS but that involves MacFuse and the NTFS plug but I keep my thumbdrive FAT32 for simplicity.
