Just recently I noticed that the finder buttons seem to have changed. I'm not sure when exactly this happened, or how. The only thing that might have changed them is when i tried out Crystal Clear, which I have uninstalled. I do not have shapeshifter or any other themes installed. Any ideas? You'll see what I mean in the picture.

A simple "ShapeShifter theme" would have sufficed.
Are you sure you reset ShapeShifter before removing it? I think that's how it works. Only tried it once years ago.

The extra two buttons you show are optional ones. The "3-steps" button shows you the complete path to that folder. The gear button shows a few handy options.
If you want to get rid of the extra buttons, hold Command and drag them off the window.
If you want them back later, or other custom buttons, open a Finder window and choose View -> Customize Toolbar... from the menubar.

Opening the Customize Toolbar menu is a nice little tutorial on what you can do with buttons in Finder. I had forgotten about some of them since my quick run through on a web tutorial for Panther, ages ago.

hmm, not sure what happened to the picture. and it wasn't a shapeshifter theme. the last time i had shapeshifter was with tiger. before i switched to leopard (about 10 months ago) i had uninstalled it completely. i only noticed this about two weeks ago.
hopefully this image works: buttons by ~spappas on deviantART
These are not the standard buttons. they are glossy and off center. i'm not looking to modify the toolbar, just get the standard look of the buttons back.

defaults remove -g AppleUseCoreUI; killall Finder
Paste this into Terminal, press return, and everything should revert to normal.
Nota bene: whenever you apply unsupported preference values via the Terminal, you are on your own when it comes to fixing potential problems.

Why can't I see the picture, but everyone else can ?
If I right-click, "Open image in new window", then it appears.
