I jsut set up Time Machine yesterday, saving to a USB-connected external hard drive. I disconnect this HD when I take my laptop home from work at night. This morning, after reconnecting and TM doing a scheduled backup, now I have two HD icons on my desktop, both labeled Time Machine Backups. One says it was created at 9:35 a.m. yesterday and modified at 12:02 p.m. The other says it was created at 9:35 a.m. yesterday and modified at 9:52 a.m. yesterday. That one shows very little disk space used, while the other one shows about 22 gb of space used. Yesterday, I had a HD icon and a folder icon on the desktop, both marked Time Machine Backups. What changes should I make?

OK, so I ended up shutting down and restarting. Now I have one USB-disk icon on the desktop (different from the icon I had earlier) and it is labeled Time Machine Backups, and everything appears normal, as I can now enter the Time Machine and see all the backups from yesterday. I guess I was mistaken in the belief that Macs don't require the restarts that many times fix things in Windows machines. In the future, I guess I should turn off Time Machine when I disconnect this external drive?

What's this folder icon you had on your desktop? Did you move anything off of the TM drive? The restart was probably only necessary because you might have done something that caused this. What else did you do besides attaching the drive, formatting, and enabling TM for the drive?

I think at some point I ejected the drive because the backup was going so slow and then started over again. I was having issues with both of my USB drives. The restart cleared up those issues (possibly caused by detaching them without ejecting them). Anyway, all seems well now.
