After installing 10.5.3, Spotlight will not get through indexing the drive.

I've tried disabling spotlight, deleting the index, and restarting, and it still doesn't work. No messages in the Console either. The mds process is using around 100% cpu. I've left it for hours and it still hasn't stopped.

Anyone else see (and solve) this?

Spotlight started indexing my TimeMachine volume, although I have it in the Privacy settings for SL.
I haven't noticed that before.

However, from what I read, SL ignores TM in the Privacy tab, because it needs SL to do its job.

Yes it also happened to me, both things. The mds process never ends to index the main hard disk, and it also tried to index the Time Machine disk, and never ends two.
I tried to do this Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger (Part 12), but it didn't work.
I'm also running Mac OS 1.5.3.
Any help will be appreciated.

I ended up solving it, just a couple of days ago. Here's what I did:
I added all the folders on the top level of the disk to the Privacy tab in the Spotlight preferences. Then I restarted. Over the course of a day or two, I removed folders from the Privacy tab, one at a time, and watched the mds process in the Activity Monitor. When I narrowed it down to a folder, I opened that folder, and added every folder inside that folder to the Privacy tab. Then I restarted and repeated the process.

I eventually narrowed it down to a mail message that had a 3MB attachment that, for some reason, could not be viewed without crashing Mail. After I deleted that message, mds settled down again.

Apple so needs to make Spotlight more robust. That kind a crap is just ridiculous.
