I've been trying to create a bootable disc for as many occasions as possible but I've run into the problem of Intel and PPC Macs booting from disks with different partition tables.

Ideally I wanted to be able to boot pretty much any Mac from an external FW drive with a variety of OS's on different partitions but I guess I'm going to need two drives, one for INtel and one for PPC machines since Intel Macs only boot to GUID drives while PPC machines use Apple Partition MAp disks.

Or am I missing something easy?

In Disk Utility on the Partition tab, you can click the options button to set the partition map for a particular partition...I think. I don't have it in front of me right now. If that option is for all partitions, then I'm mistaken.

Intel Macs can in fact boot from APM disks, though the installer won't tell you so. You have to install onto a GUID partition and clone the installation onto your APM disk.

No you can only set the partition scheme for the whole drive not each individual partition so a disc is APM or GUID only. Unless I go for the clone option.

If you're using Leopard, just install it to an APM formatted disk from a PPC Mac. You now have a disk that boots all Leopard compatible Macs.

So a leopard install on an APM drive will boot an Intel Mac then?

Yes, just take a look at the Leopard install DVD to confirm. It's APM.
