I have a Sawtooth G4 as my 2nd computer with OS X installed on it. A friend of mine picked up a Dalmation iMac for next to nothing but he's been having trouble installing OS X on it. I told him to give me a hard drive for me to install OS X on (I have all versions from 9.04 so I'm probably give him whichever version can run Firefox 3). I plan on installing OS X on his drive using my G4. Will he be able to pop this into his G3 and boot with it?

Edit. FF3 needs Tiger.

If the iMac meets the minimum requirements of Tiger listed here, then yes. However, he will need to legally own a license of Tiger for this to be ok.

After finding that iMac on Apple's specification area, it looks like it is supported by Tiger as long as the memory has been upgraded.

I did almost exactly that—I hooked up a HD in a FW enclosure, banged Tiger onto it using my G4 iMac, then popped said HD into the G3 iMac, and it worked perfectly. I did it because my Family Pack of Tiger was on DVD, but the G3 only had a CD-RW.

Strangely, it too was a Blue Dalmatian iMac…

Ok. Thanks for the confirmation, I'm swamped with college and work but want to help my coworker and friend out. I do have legal copies of all OSes and will give him whichever (looks like Tiger)...leaving me with only one legal copy of Tiger left (which is unused).
