Having heard about 10.5.4 coming out, I ran Software Update to grab it. Also installed the iMac EFI Firmware update at the same time. After being prompted to restart, I let it, and it tried to run the updates.
Even after 10 hours, the progress bar is still stuck at "Running iMac EFI Firmware Update Installer Script". From past experience with EFI/BIOS updates, I know it's a very bad idea to stop it halfway through. However, since it's looking like I don't have any options, does anyone have any suggestions? A safe way to shut down? A key I have to hold down on startup if this breaks it? A rollback I can install to put it back to the old firmware? Reassurance that the faulty installer won't have been able to touch the EFI yet? Anything?
I'm surprised that there are no reports of this available on Google. If I'm the only one, then I can describe what I was doing before clicking restart... I had Safari open (knowing that the 10.5.4 update would be tinkering with Safari, but it hadn't installed yet), and I had a stubborn Diablo II: LoD CD in my drive that wouldn't eject because it was 'in use, quit all applications and try again' (incidentally, this did not work). Additionally, previous firmware updates have worked fine.

Ouch, that sucks. Like you said, I haven't heard of this, so it seems like an isolated incident, not that that really helps any.
If we were taking bets, I'd bet that it hung either before or after the actual patching process, not in the middle of it. That's not a guarantee, but it seems more likely to me that some step there hung rather than just suddenly stopping in the middle of a write.

Ah, no worries. After 16 hours of stasis, I force-shutdown, and rebooted. Nothing had been installed, and I was still given the option to install it again. Did so, and it worked this time.

Good thing you had a backup if it failed, right? Right?

Pff, I unsuccessfully tried to install the EFI update three times. It wouldn't take.
I then just ignored the update.

Uhm, software and data is not the issue, your hardware might be toast if you interrupt a firmware update.
