So how do I do this? I have a number of USB memory sticks and I'm very frustrated by how the arrangement of items on them shows up in Finder. Is there a setting I'm not seeing, or is this just a limitation of the Finder?

1) Close all Finder windows
2) Open the external drive/memory stick
3) Move, resize, and change view for window as desired
4) Close the Finder window

DO NOT NAVIGATE TO A FOLDER ON THE DRIVE between steps 1 and 4, otherwise it will not remember anything!!!

The next time you open the window, it should work the way you want.

That works, but only until I unmount the drive. When I remount it, the unwanted arrangement returns. This is particularly frustrating because I have deleted one folder from the root of the drive, and it always shows up as a big empty space near the top of the window, plus I added another folder, and it's always at the bottom. Grrrr.

Bumping this...

It's gotten to be a real pain. I have a number of USB sticks for different purposes, and all of them demonstrate the same issue. With multiple projects going, and reorganizing my data being important to being able to use it, I sort of need some help here. I've tried jeffhatz's method on different devices with the same, negative result. Anything else I can do? Is there some sort of permission setting that could be preventing OS X from writing that hidden file with the arrangement settings?

Edit: I just (after finding out how to view the hidden .DS_Store file) discovered that it hasn't been modified since February. I'm going to delete it and see if my problem goes away.

Nope. Deleting .DS_Store did let me change the arrangement. Once. But .DS_Store wasn't recreated, so that rearrangement didn't last. I also tried using "touch" on the file, since it was modified on February 29, and stranger coding bugs have happened. Still no good.

Ideas?

I don't remember where I saw it (maybe Lifehacker), but there was a suggestion to create aliases of the drives, disable viewing of external drives on the desktop (Finder viewing options), and place the aliases wherever you want.

I'm very curious why I can't get OS X to update the .DS_Store file on my device... I've played with changing things on internal storage, and the .DS_Store file gets updated. If I delete it, it's recreated immediately-but only on internal storage. What's going on with that?
