I don't have this problem thankfully but if you press F9 or Fn-F9 on MacBook to see all open windows.
Or even better when you have Finder in menubar press alt or opt> then Window> & select Arrange in Front.

Do you mean they always open behind or intermittently?

It's happened to me once or twice. Not a big deal for me, but as I said, it's not something that happens a lot. I've taken it to be caused by having the foreground app doing something when the new app draws its window.

thanks for these ideas

Chuckit: the new 'item' always opened behind anything already open: Firefox, open folders, etc

which was a little annoying as you then had to click on the new item which you probably opened because you wanted to use it Right Just Then!

right now, after looking these suggestions over, Some things open as before (preview) in the front and some in the back ( Websters dictionary)

Beeet me. but I sure wish it would go away for Good!

funny how we get used to doing as little as possible and then Boom! an extra click ruins our day!

also of note: if Firefox is doing something ( loading ...) it still would go behind the new iteam
cheers
