I have a Canon XSi and iPhoto '08. When I goto import the Raw file I can view the file on the camera but I get an error when i goto import. Anyone else have this issue?

Raw is only supported with certain cameras:

http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html

And it doesn't look like your camera is on the list.

Well after reading the Apple forums looks like I'm not the only one with this problem. Guess I just have to wait for a fix.

That's the Aperture list; when did iPhoto get updated to support the same cameras?

As far as I understood it, iPhoto gets the same update. However, I did download the trial of Aperture and that didn't work with my RAW files either.

My coworker is successfully using RAW and Aperture with his XSi.. You sure you got all the updates for the trial?

iPhoto help pointed to the Aperture camera support list when I searched it.

When did iPhoto and Aperture not support the same cameras? RAW support is part of the operating system.

It took some hunting, but I was able to find the list of RAW formats supported by OS X (which is all iPhoto uses, unlike Aperture whose RAW importer is integrated and more capable).

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1475?viewlocale=en_US

The camera you have is supported by the 10.5.4 update. If you have any earlier version of Mac OS X, that camera's RAW files will not be readable, regardless of what version of iPhoto you have.

Just found this, too -- it supposedly adds support to Tiger.

Well I just downloaded 10.5.5 and the new RAW update and still no luck with my camera working with iPhoto. Still the same error.

I take it back. After another reboot it imports the RAW file now but it's completely black now.

What's black now? The images?

Try right-clicking (or control-click with single button mouse) on the image and choosing Reprocess RAW.

Also try seeing if you can open a RAW file in Preview or QuickLook.

The raw image is all black when its imported. However, when the camera is plugged in you can see the image just fine. When I open it in quicklook or preview it is all black.

Create a new user account to see if the problem is account-specific, and try the files on another Mac to see if they work elsewhere. (Feel free to post a link to a file for me to try, if you like.)

Very weird -- I can't open it, either. In Preview/QuickLook, I just get black. In Aperture, it loaded the RAW file's built-in preview, but then quickly replaced it with "unsupported image format" as soon as it tried to decode the RAW. Photoshop Camera Raw says it's an unsupported format.

My hunch is it's a corrupted file somehow. How are you copying the picture to your Mac?

I think I saw a problem like this at work once, but I don't think we found a solution.

OK, look at this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread....4&#7822264

It looks like you might need to use an SD card reader to copy over the files, rather than hooking up the camera with USB.

Also, are you shooting in pure RAW mode, or RAW+JPEG? The latter seems also to be causing problems.

Do the RAW files created in RAW+JPG mode work with first party software?

Just for verification, would you mind posting a new RAW image (that works) for me to tinker with?

Wow, look at the difference in file size! The corrupted file is under 4MB, the good file is over 13!

And it opened right up!

Yeah that is pretty strange. I was wondering why my RAW file was the same size as the JPEG. I'm happy now.

I see where Apple posted an update for iPhoto/Aperture on Sept 16, 2008 that's supposed to improve RAW file support for many cameras (including the Canon). Anyone know if this fixes the issue?
