I have some files I have been moving between volumes on my MacPro. In order to save backup space, I thought I would remove the temporary copies from the volumes other than the final resting place. In Time Machine, I clicked on the temporary volume and under the options wheel I selected remove all backups.

What happened:
1. backups on temporary volume were removed
2. backups on the final volume were removed
3. the files on my main drive in current time were also removed!!!

Does anyone know how I can get these files back either in Time Machine or on my main volumes???

Please help. Thanks in advance.

(Currently scanning with Data Rescue II from Prosoft and SubRosaSoft's recovery tool.)

Setup:
early 2008 Mac Pro 8-core x 2.8GHz, 4G RAM, 1.8TB backup raid0, 1TB media raid0, 320gb system disk, 1TB scratch disk
os x 10.5.4

Thanks,
Frank

As long as the file isn't changing (just being moved), it wasn't taking up any more space than one copy in your Time Machine backup volume anyway.

If you have selected to remove they backups, then Time Machine will, well, remove them. I'm a bit puzzled that you claim the originals have been removed as well. The settings in Time Machine do not affect the original files.

Are you sure you haven't deleted the original files yourself?

I just did a couple of experiments removing unwanted Time Machine backups (plus my experience in using it in the past), and in no case was I able to make it remove the current file, even if I tried "delete all backups" in the "today" view!

Whatever happened, probably didn't happen via Time Machine.

Did you at any point move or copy files manually from within the Time Machine backups folders themselves (that is, going into them via Finder, not Time Machine)?
