After resetting Safari, I lost a password that I had not written down.
Can I restore it from the keychain?
Thanks!

You may be able to, but it's probably easier to just use a "Forgot my password" link on the website and have a new password eMailed to you.

open up Keychain Access and click Internet under Passwords. Double-click the site/password entry you want and then, in the pop-up window, click 'show password'.

Thanks, Cold Warrior!
Unfortunately, I did not find a single password except to my mailboxes. Even the password to MacNN, which is still there - I couldn't find it. Neither could I see the password for my wireless network, etc.
If you check the log-in box "remember me on this computer", does this actually store the password on your keychain, or somewhere else?

The "remember me on this computer" checkbox that many sites have leaves a browser cookie — it doesn't actually store your password. What stores your password in the Keychain is that popup window that appears after you hit submit in a form asking "Would you like to member the password for this site?"

Thanks.
Regarding my password, it's lost then.
Just for the future: how do you get Safari to store a password on the keychain?

When you are signing in to the site, don't select the "remember me" option, just hit whatever the input button is: Safari should give you a dialog asking if you'd like the password to be remembered, say Yes to that and you are almost done.

Huh, Safari never asked me anything. Not about the keychain, nor if I had a great day.

Preferences->Autofill->User Names and Passwords. Resetting Safari will delete them again. The Reset dialog explicitly states that.
You can restore either your cookies database or your old keychain from your Time Machine backup.
