Like something from the magic roundabout....

I'm frantically doing a back up, (the last one is a week old eek ) but in the meantime, at the risk of killing my laptop by using Firefox, I was wondering if anyone had an idea what the heck that was?!?!

I was using VLC and suddenly the screen started doing magical things All kinds of weird colours etc. From red to yellow to green and black, it was like one of those iTunes visualizer things. I managed to do a shutdown, restarted and everything is fine.

My guess is that it had something to do with VLC, but I wonder because it wasn't just the VLC screen that went crazy, it was everything (although it started in the VLC screen. I'm running the latest version, 0.9.2 and OSX 10.5.5

I thought I'd seen every kind of crash and Mac weirdness but this is a new one to me.

Unfortunately, this could indicate a problem with your graphics chip. It's probably not software related. You don't mention what machine you have, but it could require a logic board replacement (worst case). Hopefully, it doesn't come back.

Was your laptop very hot after using it with VLC?

Those glitches happen to me after using a graphic intensive application for an extended period on a surface that doesn’t allow the heat to dissipate (e.g. in bed). (example)

Suppose you could take it to apple and have it fixed, I’m quite sure it’s just the GPU overheating. The glitches are gone for me after 5 minutes of letting the MBP idle.
Personally, I’m planning to buy a new MBP in the near future anyway I’ll just deal with it, no biggie for me.

Forgot to add: mine is a MacBookPro2,1 (2.33 C2D, 17", X1600)

Someone posted problems with the latest update to VLC in the applications forum. They recommended to downgrade. Not sure what the changes were but I won't upgrade. Working great with the version I have now.
