This is most annoying.

Just wiped the HDD in my G4 QS 1.2 and installed Leopard. With 2 GB of RAM it actually runs pretty well. However I'm getting this issue where every few minutes the dialogue System Prefs has unexpectedly quit.

I've done some research on teh interwebz and it doesn't seem too uncommon however I have done the following

deleted the plist file
changed the desktop (some people suggested issues with corrupt desktop image file.
Downloaded, installed and run the updater to 10.5.5 (issue started under 10.5.1)
I don't really want to do a whole archive and install as it feels like a sledgehammer to crack a nut so any ideas before I go nuclear on it.

Have you deleted the file /Users/you/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache ?

Does the same crash happen to a newly created user account?

What do the crash logs say? Copy and paste here if you like. Are you in a certain pref panel? Did you restore any of your files?

I am in the process of making the switch from pc to mac. I have seen on various posts of people having issues with leopard, they are told to navigate to a certain folder. Something what Hal Itosis just said "Have you deleted the file /Users/you/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache ?" I was just curious how you know to go to that exact file, what files are safe to delete in os x, is this similar to the application files on a pc? Thanks in advance, Mike

Caches and logs are pretty much always safe to delete. They just get recreated. plist (preference) files are safe to delete; the associated app will just create a new preferences file with its default settings when the app is run again.
