I have 2 macs with this same issue, running leopard.

Whenever I want to log out or shut down, the mac comes back at me after a couple minutes and tells me that log out timed out because of one application or another not quitting fast enough.

This is annoying. Is there any way to get OS X to ignore this and to continue the shut down process?

Thanks.

What programs are you still running at shut down that are stopping it?

even just the normal apps: safari, firefox, mail, address book, preview.....

If I don't manually close half of these, then log out times out.

I am using a computer with not much ram, so I know there's a lot of virtual ram being used. but still, I'm only looking for a way to possibly force the mac to keep shutting down and ignore the timeout process.

If you have multiple tabs or windows open in web browsers, they will, by default, ask if you want to save those tabs or windows when you quit, preventing shutdown. Turn those off in preferences.

Mail will halt shutdown if you have an open new message or if it's checking for new mail. If you have a short time set for how often it should check for new email, that may be the problem.

I'm not sure how Address Book or Preview would prevent shutdown unless you were in the process of editing something in those tools.
