Sometimes, seemingly randomly, my menubar sound icon stop responding. I can move it up and down, and the sound of my speakers wont change. Has anybody else had this issue? When I do move it, it does make the chirp, but not at the volume it should be.

Download PTH Volume. See if you can control it through that app.

Thanks, that does work. However, I'm still curious as to why I have to use a 3rd party application to control my volume. I'll use PTH volume for now though.

Well, you shouldn't. That was, more or less, a troubleshooting step.
Are you using your notebook speakers when the problem occurs, or external speakers? What does your audio setup look like?
Also... do you see any other sources in PTH... or just your internal speakers?

I can solve the problem by plugging in headphones for about a second, and removing them. Then the menubar updates to what the volume is, and works properly. Anybody else experience this?

Whoa. That definitely sounds like a hardware problem. Is your computer still under warranty? I would try an archive/install of OSX to make sure it's not the OS, and then give Apple a call.

On second thought... try scrapping your sound prefs first it is in your Library in your Home folder. The file is called com.apple.systemsound.
