Folder copied from desktop (to laptop) now has items that are "read only" or "copies.

I copied a major documents file (sort of "documents within the documents folder" from my desktop to my new MB. This is my own personal documents folder -- the heart and soul of my word processing life, so to speak. It's about 1.65 GB. It copied wonderfully well (though slowly!) over my home wireless network. Yes, I know I should have used a different way to do this.
Problem is, now that I've tried to use the laptop version, is that the AppleWorks items are locked versions, so I had to open copies. The Word documents are read-only, so again I had to open the item and then save it as something else.
It sounds like a permission problem to me -- the folder itself is "read and write" on both machines. It sounds like certain items within it might now have proper persmissions. But I have to tell you, I did NOT have this problem doing the same thing with my old laptop.
Any ideas?

OK, I'm confused. So you're saying these are all old AppleWorks documents that you are trying to open or save in Word? I think a little bit more clarification is needed here about exactly what types of files you're working with. It could be a permissions issue, but I also seem to recall that if you're trying to edit old AppleWorks documents in Word, they are read-only only because Word can't write to an AppleWorks doc.

It's a mish mash. I have all kinds of documents, but really, most of them are appleWorks (6.2 -- I have that installed on both machines) and Word, also installed on both machines. And the documents I was working with today are very recently created ones, such as within the past week or so.
When I tried to open, on my laptop, via the recently copied folder from my desktop, a Word document, it came up as "read only). To make changes, I had to save it as something else. When I tried to open a recent Apple Works document, the message was that it was locked and did I want to open a copy. In both cases, I either saved the document as something else or opened the copy, and then saved them to a new location.
But what I want is a folder that's the same, and easy sync-able -- on both machines.
Sorry for any confusion.

My guess is that your accounts on both machines aren't the same. The UID is probably different. So when you copy those folders over, you aren't the owner and don't have r/w access. Do a Get Info on the enclosing folder and propagate the right permissions on the destination Mac.

Permissions seems to be the issue. So -- I changed the permissions on the original folder to r/w. However, most of the items in it (OK, I checked several, by no means all) STILL have r/w on only me, as the original owner, or whatever.
So -- is there a way around this? How do I get the folder, and all the items in it, from the iMac to my laptop, and have permission to open everything, etc?
Thanks. Eventually I'll be using chronosync to sync the two folders, but I have to get this permissions thing ironed out, first.
