For years I've never really understood how file associations work on the Mac. Sometimes they show the app they open with, sometimes they don't. Sometimes SOME of them show the right icon while others don't.

Only now that I'm configuring the new hotness (new high-end MBP yay!) do I care to invest some effort into it. Look at me, using CandyBar and everything... (though this is not a CandyBar problem - been happening forever really).

- Text files are open with TextMate, though they show the standard icon.
- XLSX open with Excel; only one of them shows the right icon.
- DOCX opens with Word; shows properly (not shown here).

What's strange is that when I'm logging in, they all (briefly) show the right icon then quickly convert to what you're seeing now

Help please

Rob

Leopard shows an icon preview for every file type that Quicklook knows about, just like you could do with any image file on previous version of the OS. It's more useful for some file types than others. You can turn it off globally or for just one folder in "View Options". I don't know why just one file on the desktop refuses to change.

What the... I've gone a year without (1) knowing about Quicklook and (2) that SPACE activates it. Even if my question doesn't get answered, this is progress!

Your question got answered. Turn off "Show icon preview" in the View->View Options if you don't want the icon previews.

Ahhh I had done that earlier, though it appears I was only doing it for a specific folder.

I closed all Finder windows and then did it... NOW it works.

YEAY! Thanks guys
