EFI-X is an USB dongle intstalled on the motherboard, and can turn a PC into hack-mac running 10.5.5.

Runs with motherboards manufactured by Gigabyte. Cost savings about 30% compared to a Mac Pro.
Heard anything about this? Risk for Apple by users circumventing Mac Pros to get a workstation for less?

It's not ready for prime time yet by any stretch according to those who have it. Also, Veltliner, you're incorrect in thinking this competes directly with Mac Pros. Mac Pros are workstation class, very high end machines. There's no way to build a Mac Pro for 30% less. What efi-x does is offer another path to EFI emulation. The market that efi-x competes with is one that Apple doesn't compete in: the mid-range tower market.

That Apple's OS X updates work directly (at least so far). They don't if you use one of the hacked versions of the OS from a torrent.

I never thought of Gigabyte as having anything to do with any "midrange" anything... All of their boards that I've seen have been quite "value priced."

They are value priced, but they're the most reliable board I build with and have an excellent warranty service. If they can't fix a faulty board (usually two or three years old by this point), they'll send me a credit note.

I thought so. This is why I put a question mark behind the last sentence.
Generally, I wouldn't buy any clone, neither Psyware (hardware) nor hack-mac (through software) as I prefer reliability.
But for some people who'd prefer to have a mid-range tower to a high end workstation it might be tempting. I wonder if it was tempting enough to make Apple think about a midrange tower on its own...
