Is postfix necessary?

Root question: If I don't run my own mail server, do I really need postfix to be running?

I was getting a lot of postfix respawn message in the system.log file.

Nov 14 03:57:08 m81 postfix/master[3445]: fatal: open lock file pid/master.pid: cannot create file exclusively: No such file or directory
Nov 14 03:57:09 m81 com.apple.launchd[1] (org.postfix.master[3445]): Exited with exit code: 1
Nov 14 03:57:09 m81 com.apple.launchd[1] (org.postfix.master): Throttling respawn: Will start in 9 seconds

These error messages were occurring every 9-10 seconds, continuously. I think it was also interfering with Time Machine, as TM would keep returning "failed backup" messages.

I found a command-line means of shutting off postfix so it would unload and not re-load on startup:

sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.postfix.master.plist

I did this and the errors stopped (presumably because I killed off postfix). The TM errors also ceased.

You don't need Postfix unless you wish to send or receive mail directly from your workstation. It can also be useful if you want to be alerted when there are errors in any cronjobs you have running.

Since the only cron job I run is daily ClamX updates and scans, and I can look at the system logs for problems, I really don't need it. I'll keep it axed.

As a side note--does Leopard have any other unnecessary services running? Apache comes to mind, but Activity Monitor doesn't show it running. I don't recall seeing postfix listed either, but maybe I didn't really look for it in the past.

Apache is off by default, but can be switched on in the Sharing pane. Of course, you can install your own version via a binary installer and/or package management like Macports which will not be controlled via Apple's GUI.

The best way to find out what services are running and listening for network connections is this:

Code:
netstat -a | grep -i listen

This may have happened if you did a basic upgrade to Leopard and
if the file "/etc/postfix/main.cf" wasn't properly updated. (Why this
hasn't happen in *every* 'upgrade' case isn't clear... but yours is the
second one i've seen posted about... or maybe it's a different item in
/etc/postfix/ this time? Anyway... )

Not 100% sure but, perhaps something in this thread will be of use: "strange log org.postfix.master"
