this thing is whirring forever now, while doing nothing!

.......my iMac G5 will spool-up its fan like a 747 if I ask much of it, but my intel iMac does not. I don't use the G5 much, so it doesn't bother me - much.

Have you checked top or Activity Monitor to make sure you don;t have a background process putting lots of load on the CPU?

Have you tried resetting PRAM and SMC?
