I have started saving my personal files in .dmg with encryption, using disk utility, (having discovered how to do it) especially 15gb of photo's onto a 16gb USB flash drive, in addition to saving onto DVDs and external HDDs.

(Flash to take with me on holidays.)

I occurs to me that should the unforseen happen, I may need to open these files on a Windows, or Linux computer.

From your own experience, is there an easy way to open encrypted .dmg files in WIndows or Linux ?

My personal laptops only use W98 and Linux (Asus), but I presume that should I need to I could open .dmg under a more recent version of WIndows on a relatives PC.

It also occurs to me to keep the DVD backups, as well as my external HDD & Time Machine backups, because the USB flash drives are so easily formatted by a.n.other person.

Googling seems to just show really old posts.

Alternatively, a way to encrypt files and folders that can be opened in any of the operating systems.

I know I can create .ZIP file easily in OS by clicking on file, then choosing Action, Compress, very easy, but no encryption

Similar for YemuZip, PC compatible, no encryption

Use TrueCrypt for multiplatform encrypted disk images (and a whole host of other things).

That appears to be exactly what I'm looking for, thanks.

I'll give it a try when I'm more awake !
