I have the following configuration:

Internet:
  • 5MB DL/ 1MB UL Cable Internet
Server:
  • iMac G5 (iSight)
  • 2.1 GHz
  • 2.5 GB RAM
  • 500 GB HDD
  • Wired Directly to DLink Router (DIR-655)
  • OS X Server 10.5.6
Client Machines:
  • Mac mini (Intel Core Duo 2.3GHz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD) - Wired
  • MacBook Pro (15" Intel Core 2 Duo 2.3GHz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD) - Wireless
  • MacBook Pro (17" Intel Core 2 Duo 2.93GHz, 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD) - Wireless
  • All machines have OS X 10.5.6 installed
This was probably more info than you need but I am going crazy here... I have a brand new clean install of OS X Server on the iMac. I have placed in the Shared folder on the HDD all of the sub folders I would like to share over the network to the only two users who will be needing access.

These users will have access to different folders form one another. So using the Server Preferences application I setup the two users in the Users section of the application and then use the File Sharing section to add the share points I would like to have and set the proper permissions to the users. Very basic stuff here. Right?

Well it seems as this stuff just doesn't work for me... Keep in mind that when I set this server up it created an account in the Users list (Located under Accounts in the System Preferences) called Local Administrator - This to me was the main account. I was logged into the server with my own account (was created when I installed the server software and it has administrative privileges) when I made the other user (my wife). We are the only two that will use this network.

Issues that are occouring:
  • The share points that I set for only her to see (only 1 of the folders) - Comes up as a network icon (the grayish space ball). Is this because I am logged in the server as me when I set her as the only user to see this over the network?
  • Since creating her user... She can log in from another client machine, but the only folder she sees is her home folder. Which by the was was labeled empty until I made her a user in the local accounts then the "empty" folder became her shortname. None of the share points show up for her.
  • I can log in with my my user and can see all of the share points I made for both of us and just myself. I cannot see the 1 folder I dedicated to her. So it seems as if my permissions and shares work correctly.
This is the second time I have installed OS X Server on this iMac... The first time I did this... doing exactly as I described above - I went ahead and converted the server to an advanced server. I thought it would give me more control... that was my bad... way too many options for such a low load server. I ended up screwing things up beyond repair for my skills...

Ultimately what I am trying to do is so very simple but I am getting frustrated... Basically if I create a user and add share points. Why can they not see them?

Should I be logged in as Local Administrator to setup these things? Although I don't see how that matters if my account has admin privileges...

Sorry for the long winded explanation... but this is all the info I have. Hopefully someone can help out...

Thanks...

Another note about the above:

I have determined that I can have my wife view the shared folders if I do the following:

Goto Server Preferences -> File Sharing -> Highlight the Shared Folder I want to have her view -> Click the Edit Permissions Button

The next screen states:

---

Choose the level of access you want for the "Shared Folder Name" Shared Folder

Allow Read and Write Access for:

[x] All Registered Users
[ ] Only These Registered Users and Groups

[ ] User 1 (my wife)
[ ] User 2 (myself)

---

After performing this change she can see the folder I have shared... but now so can I and I didn't want that. How come when I try to set permissions for just an individual user to view a shared resource it does not work and I have to have "All Registered User" checked...

My original settings before was:

---

Choose the level of access you want for the "Shared Folder Name" Shared Folder

Allow Read and Write Access for:

[ ] All Registered Users
[x] Only These Registered Users and Groups

[x] User 1 (my wife)
[ ] User 2 (myself)

---

Any thoughts... this is driving me nuts!

Anyone? There has got to be a reason why this is occurring
