Can't turn bluetooth off on Macbook Pro

I have a macbook pro running 10.5.6 and if I click on the bluetooth icon in the menu bar the option to turn bluetooth off is greyed out, same for when I got to Bluetooth in System Prefs. Anyone know what is going on here and how I can turn bluetooth off?

Try resetting the SMC.
