I've searched all over the internet but have yet to come across an answer. I love my Mac, but why is it that when I play a video in a web browser on my MacBook, (be it Flash, QuickTime, etc.) my CPU usage is anywhere from 60-80%, yet when I play the same video on a laptop running Windows, the CPU usage is always in the single digits?

I realize that video takes a toll on the CPU with integrated video cards, but it doesn't seem to have the same effect on Windows based laptops with integrated video cards. Is the CPU usage possibly just calculated differently, or is the Mac architecture somehow just really inefficient at this?

Thanks in advance,
Mike.

With Flash, the main reason is because Flash is a complete piece of **** on the Mac. Adobe ****ed it up, though it's improved somewhat over the years.

Integrated video cards have nothing to do with CPU usage during video playback.

Flash for OS X is certainly a stinker, but the video playback issues with OS X are more widespread. Movies that play fine in VLC on Windows on a 1.8Ghz Pentium M stutter and freeze in VLC, mplayer, QuickTime (with and without Perian) on 1.8Ghz Core 2 Duo Mac.

It's not just a statistics display issue.

What codecs are you referencing, mduell?

Just dragged a 2,000 kbps x264 mp4 into Safari (10.4.11, 6 Gb, 2x2 Xeon). 9%, no problems - just Perian and the default codecs installed.
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.

Unless they are flash videos, I have never experienced spikes in cpu usage. videos have been playing back smoothly ever since using my second iBook with 600 MHz (granted, there was no x264 back then).

Things get messy when flash is involved, but then again, my brother is having similar problems at times on his pc.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

QT H.264/AAC-LC in MOV container (trailers downloaded from Apple.com) or x264/AC3 in MKV container (ripped DVDs).

It is my understanding that .mkv files just plain suck.

VLC uses about 15% CPU when playing videos on my 1.8 GHz G5.
The era of anthropomorphizing hardware is over.
