Hey all!!
I would like to know if it is possible to disable icon preview, but only for network volumes??
I'm fine with the Leopard Finder generating a preview for local files, but when i'm accessing my remote WebDAV or SMB network volumes, it chokes and freezes the Finder momentarily.
I know you can do it on a per window basis by unchecking it in the "Show View Options" palette window, but I connect to alot of various network shares so would love to disable it globally.
Any ideas??

One thing I did notice is:
When you connect to a remote share using SMB instead of AFP you will not get the icon preview.
Just try SMB://x.x.x.x instead of AFP://x.x.x.x
Cheers,
Cospefogo.

Thanks for that info.
Well you can use AFP vs SMB, but that is only provided the remote server is hosting AFP! The server in question is using Windows Vista, therefore naturally supports SMB/CIFS and we're using Apache for WebDAV. Not to sure how to serve AFP from a Vista w/out buyin Windows Server (which used to do this... but can Server 2008 still server AFP/AppleTalk?? )
As a temporary work-around, we have the file server set to Read-Write (from a preferred Read-only) which allows the OS X Finder to create and store .DS_Stores files all over the Vista server HD. These .DS_Stores remember the Show Icon Preview being de-selected, which is good. However, its not ideal to have these .DS_Store files all over the network share.
Any other ideas??

If you use something like Blue Harvest, that can simply prevent the creation of .DS_store files on remote servers, would that do it?

Hey,
Thanks for the suggestion.
In this case, something like Blue Harvest would not be a solution. Blue Harvest would simply delete the .DS_Store files, which would be good -- but at the same time deleting this .DS_Store file would cause the Finder to forget the setting for Show Icon Preview being disabled. So it achieves the goal of cleaning up the Mac 'dust' from the network shares, but then we're back having to manually go to View Options and disabling it from that palette window for each share mounted.
Any other ideas?
