3gb Sleepimage file in >>private under Whatsize ?

Just "Whatsized" my iMac, and this large file is present ... Sleepimage.



Any ideas what it is ?

And can I remove it ?

iMac Intel Core i5, 2.5GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB 21.5" Monitor 10.7.4.
iMac 17" 2.0ghz Intel Core 2 Duo w 3gb memory (White one) 10.6.8.
Internal 500gb / 160gb plus External 500gb x 2 (2x Time Machine)

Its used for safesleep
You can disable it using the following commands withing the terminal window
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
sudo nvram "use-nvramrc?"=false

Once you turn off safesleep you can easily remove it

If you're not dealing with a storage shortage, I'd not worry about it.

edit: safesleep is basically the contents of the ram stored in a file, in case your laptop loses power, hence the term "safe" sleep

As I don't use laptops, only desktop, I wonder why it is there !!

I will do as you suggest.

it took a couple of restarts, but sleepimage has now disappeared.

A desktop computer can lose power during sleep as well. I wished mine would so safe sleep.

The file was dated 2nd Feb '09.

I usually save before iMac sleeps, in fact as I go along, even with autosave.
