I just ordered my copy of 10.5.6

I recall many threads here about 'backing up' 10.5 when it came out and I never managed to do this myself w DL media.

are there any issues making a back up of 10.5.6 w toast 10.1?

cheers and thanks

There should not be any issue, no.

Usually it seems the issuue with backing up a OS X install disk is that they are larger than a typical DVD (barely). I suppose you could try a DL DVD.

Yeah, the install DVD is DL. You can't burn the image to a regular DVD-R.

What works very well though is cloning the DVD to a partition. It's bootable just like the DVD, but it's much faster.

Isn't Disk Utility a better option than Toast?

Indeed it is. It's more reliable, it's free, and it's available wherever there's OS X.

many thanks for these ideas

but me it hasnt been so easy.

I have two drives: Sony DW D150 A upper bay and a Pioneer DVD-RW 112D lower bay

using toast 9 in each drive i got verification errors on sector 1856912 and 1458704 and the first DVD I didn't keep the info.

so i tried burn w Disk Utility and it also had verification issue but didn't give out sector numbers

its intersting to note that on the Sony drive DU said "unable to burn 'disk 5' the drive failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media"

I rarely use DL media and this media is:

DVD+ R double layer write speed 2x RITEKD01

is my problem w inferior media? id this one of those layer cross over issues?

can you suggest media that might be better?

as I say I rarely use DL media but would like "reliable" back up of the OS before I install it.

cheers and thanks

Yes, installs are so much faster off a partition than the DVD itself - Leopard installs in well under 10 minutes.

rotuts - what brand of optical media are you using?
