Where does 10.5.6 store software update files before installation

A printer driver has downloaded automatically, but I did not install it. I want to remove this file before it is installed. The file is for the HP Driver, version 1.1.1, and the last time it installed it wrecked my system.
A previous search of this forum states that the file should be in the /library/updates folder, but on my 10.5.6 system I have no such folder.
Is it hidden? Any suggestions?

Just to tell you, many printer drivers are already loaded on the computer. You can try just connecting your computer to the printer and see if you can print a page. Generally, all downloads go in the Downloads stack in your dock. If you can't find it with spotlight, I really don't know where it could be. You can also try searching for the file extension that the installation file was in.

I finally found it. The /Library / Updates folder does not show up under my User Account, but when I go directly to the hard drive, the folder is there.
I have had a real problem with the HP Driver Update 1.1.1. On two separate occasions I installed this update, and it messed my system so bad I had to delete all printers and reinstall from the original disks. My system WAS set to automatically download, but I caught this third attempt to update the HP drivers before it installed. So I wanted to delete the update so as not to inadvertently install.
So I have successfully removed it.

Be sure to tell software update to ignore that update, or this might happen again.

Btw, it is possible that HP software is responsible for doing the download and not the System - if you already have the HP printer software installed, it might include an Updater app that is launched at start up, which you will need to check and alter the settings for to prevent automatic installation.

I unchecked the boxes in the software updater, so now I must manually check for updates, and manually download them. Is there a way to lockout that particular HP Driver 1.1.1 update?

I checked with the HP tech support group, and they said that particular update (HP Driver 1.1.1) did not originate from them. The HP tech support folks also advised not to update any HP driver unless it came from their site.
As for an automatic HP updater, I couldn't find any Updater app included in the HP Printer Utility. I did not specifically ask HP about this, but then they didn't mention it either. As a general rule, I always turn off automatic updates from individual applications. I just wasn't thinking when I allowed the Apple updater to check automatically. And now the Apple updater is set to manual only..... no more auto updates!

If you see an update you don't want, select its title in the Software Update window, then choose Ignore Update from the (iirc) File menu.
