Im about to install 10.5.6 on a new HD on my MacPro

I recall in the past there was a way to migrate all the apps and more importantly all the permissions and passwords from the 'current' OS in my case 10.4.X

so that when I reboot to the ***new*** OS everything works Just Fine

how might I maximize my chances of this?

I think you're thinking of Archive and Install.

yess thats it

how ever this give me the HeeeBeeee JeeeBeees:

You can choose to preserve your user and network settings before installing. This option automatically moves existing users, Home directories, and network settings. This also skips the Setup Assistant after installation.

Note: Because the "Preserve user and network settings" option moves, not copies, existing users, Home directories, and network settings, from the Previous Systems folder to the newly installed System, these items will not exist in the Previous Systems folder after the Archive and Install is complete.

Id like both the old 10.4.x HD and the new 10.5.6 HD to both work

will moving the setting as above nnot let 10.4.X HD work?

cheers and thanks!

If you want both systems to work on both disks, you need to use the Migration Assistant.

Attach the 10.4 disk to your computer, then run the 10.5 installer and install 10.5 onto the other empty disk. Tell the installer to use the Migration Assistant to transfer the users (and applications if you want to) from your 10.4 disk to the 10.5 installation. Since the Migration Assistant only copies from, but doesn't change, the 10.4 disk, it still can be used as before.

Archive & Install doesn't do what you want at all, so I don't know why Big Mac suggested it.

<Shrug.> Sounded like that's what he wanted. and it wasn't clear that he wanted to dual boot between Tiger and Leopard.

Sorry.

I did this automatically after the reboot into 10.5.6
