Last night, I started having problems with my iMac; beachball galore and the system froze. This morning, I ran the maintenance scripts and the repaired the permissions (using Main Menu) and got weird results, even have a hard time booting and the computer is running extremely slow (beachball when running any application) when I get it to boot (turned on after 4 or 5 attempts, even had a hard time in safe mode).

iMac 24 (aluminum)
2.4 Intel C2D
2 GB DDR2 SDRAM
Leopard 10.5.6

Below are the repair permissions log to see if someone could figure something out or point me in the right direction. I also wonder is this could be some kind of hardware failure.

Any suggestions would be appreciated,
Gene

What's the SMART status of your hard drive in Disk Utility? Verified or something else?

Thanks for the quick response. Yes, the SMART status is verified.

Someone suggested I run the bundled 10.5.6 update which "might" correct the problem, think it's worth a shot? I usually do the updates via the automatic function.

Thanks again,
Gene

Hmm, another problem, can't even open a DMG file, double click on it and nothing happens...

You could try running the combo update - it can't do any harm.

Are you backing up or using Time Machine? I would *strongly* suggest it.

So here's an update for you, my MBP stopped booting today. As of yesterday there was a terrific lag coming out of sleep mode but it would catch up.

I was in a different user account today doing some testing for work, I got a beachball and everything became unresponsive. With 4GB RAM - that shouldn't happen.

Managed to get back to my regular user account and set Time Machine going. Once that was done I rebooted which then proceeded to get stuck on the loading screen. Rebooting again with verbose mode enabled, gave me disk0s2 I/O errors... hmmm hard drive problems.

I rebooted into Windows 7 and ran Speedfan to read off my SMART information, this said I had 1 sector that was awaiting remapping. So, right now I'm doing a chkdsk C: /R with Windows 7. If this doesn't work I'll try Disk Warrior, if that doesn't work, I'll replace the drive - it's only two months old.

The point of my ramblings are, that you should try and check your SMART values. If you have Windows you can use Speedfan and do the online analysis, otherwise you can try and install smartmontools on OS X and use the Terminal to find out the values via smartctl.

As always - BACKUP YOUR DATA.

Edit: You could try Smart Utility in OS X first http://www.volitans-software.com/products.php
