I accidentally formatted my MacBook with 5 years of photos, documents and music on yesterday and I'm mortified.
The thing is that I had my MacBook hooked up to my Vista PC in target disk mode so I could transfer my data to Windows but I clicked format, but as soon as I realized what was going on I pulled the firewire link, this was about 2 seconds after the format started.
I hooked up the MacBook HD to my other mac and used Data Rescue 2 to see if it could get anything and it seemed like it recovered everything, but now the files dont play or open?
Does anyone know how I can get these working again?

Have you tried getting the material off your backup disk?

… and you don't have a backup, right?
Your best bet is DataRescue. Do not use DiskWarrior.

I should add that you need a second harddrive for DataRescue, because it only reads off your data from the old harddrive. So one way or another, you cannot wait until 2 GB Time Capsules are available, you need to invest in another harddrive now. DataRescue is a data recovery tool that does not try to repair your other drive. As it only reads from the damaged drive, it will not make things worse. Any tool that writes data may kill your data on the damaged partition. I've had that happen to me once (rather: my parents), but fortunately, they had had a backup so it wasn't a problem.

Just to emphasize this one more time: do not skimp out on this investment and go with another tool, just to save a few bucks. (Unless that's what your data is worth it to you.)

I go with OreoCookie

DataRescue II is the daddy for this sort of thing. Disk Warrior is for directory repair NOT data recovery. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you do not use the formatted drive AT ALL before using DRII. Any use of the drive will dramaticaly reduce the chances of recovery of any data at all.

You will need another hard drive to install your OS and DRII and some (a lot) of spare time to allow DRII to scan your formatted drive for data. Read the manual, DRII is quite complex and you need to set it running properly in order to recover useful files, which, if you have not touched your drive since formatting it, you will be able to do.
