We're upgrading our clients to Leopard.

Our office server is Tiger (10.4.x)

Main thing I've noticed is that when you open a finder window on a Tiger Share volume, and then type in the first few characters of the file you're searching for, it no longer presents any results.

Instead it defaults back to "This Mac".

If I try selecting the Share name instead of "This Mac" it still shows no results?

What's going on? At this point, I can't use "find", spotlight, or the little search box on Finder windows to search for files on any of our Tiger Share Volumes.

Make sure your search is by file name not contents. Whenever I search, the default Find window is by contents and I frequently change it to file name.

I tried that. It does not work by file name either.

You need to enable Spotlight indexing on your shares.

How do I do that?

(Keep in mind that the Server is Tiger 10.4, not a leopard server). The hints i've found for turning on Spotlight on the Server do not seem to apply to Tiger 10.4 servers, but rather only to Leopard Servers.)

Never mind, I guess it's only a feature of Leopard Server. I couldn't find it in Server Admin or Workgroup Manager on Tiger Server.

Update:

Okay i used

sudo mdutil /Volumes/missing_share_name -i on

To start indexing on the Share that wasn't showing any results, from this tip here:
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...50430233117572

Now when I 'search' from the finder window or else where, it is finding files, but ONLY the files added to the Share since I turned on the indexing command.

How do I force Spotlight to rebuild it's index of the ENTIRE share. I realize this will take time, but we need to be able to access all the files on the share, not just ones added since turning on the index.

I'm temped to use this tip to manually rebuild but want to get some other opinions.

On thing you should be aware of is that Tiger server can't serve Leopard updates. All of your clients are going to have to d/l their updates over the internet.

I'm not worried about Leopard Updates at this point. Unless I can get the Spotlight working, there won't be any further Leopard Client upgrades. Frankly our Tiger server is stable, so we see little reason to move the server as that's a huge hassle.

Your tip won't work for what you want. That tip is telling the client to index the share. The server needs to create the index on the server itself so it will be accessible to all clients. Since the option is not in any of the Tiger server tools, I don't think it's possible.

You should really look into upgrading to Leopard Server. You won't be able to take advantage of all the Leopard Client management capabilities without Leopard Server.

I agree that it's not working. I tried using the '-a' command to apply indexing to all volumes, but the index for the Shares doesn't seem to be working.

sudo mdutil -E -a

Should have erased the index and rebuild it for all volumes. Doesn't seem to have worked for the mounted shares.

so how to Leopard clients normally search Tiger shares? Certainly this must have come up before?? There must have been many other shops where people have older servers (Tiger) etc that were being accessed by Leopard clients.

All of our Tiger clients can search the Tiger Shares. It wasn't a problem until I install the Leopard client on one of our machines. Only the Leopard client can't 'search' the shares, all the Tiger clients continue to operate as before. (Another words, when I go to another Tiger Client and search from a finder window, it works as expected, listing the files that correspond to my query.)

Leopard's Spotlight index is different than Tiger's.

Yes. Further reading has lead me to the same conclusion.

Is there a way to turn off 'spotlight' in leopard so that it defaults to simple folder search like did on Tiger for Shares?

Currently it seems like the only way to use Spotlight with a Leopard client on a share is with a Leopard Server.

Here's a substitute I've found that seems to work okay.

Quicksilver

Added my Tiger Shares to the Custom search part of the program and can now search for files on the Share. Updates the index every 10 minutes. Not sure if it's a full rescan of the Share (which would suck) or just a scan for changes.
