Greetings, I've been looking for maintenance information regarding what to do with your computer should you have a sudden power outage/failure (or other similar cause that makes your computer shut down instantly). This thread is intended to be a thread for maintenance and software routines and tips related to what to do after returning to your computer after a power outage. This thread is not to be about "My computer now doesn't start up" and will be considered off-topic. I intended to find the most relevant forum for this question, and deeming the information relevant to this thread as being most closely related to software maintenance tips using Mac OS X 10.5, I deemed it relevant to the Mac OS X forum.

After searching the internet: Mac Power failure maintenance tips - Dogpile Web Search

The only information I could find was on an O'Reilly page for Mac OS X Panther.

And I did not see any information here in the MacNN forums regarding such tips. The results that I did find were numerous threads and complaints about computers or monitors not starting up after power issues. These have nothing to do with the topic.

So, what would you all recommend doing, say, if you had 3 or 4 apps open, working on a document, and, all of a sudden, the power goes out, say, due to a thunderstorm?
What maintenance would you perform upon returning to your computer once the power goes back on?

I suspect that there might also be small hardware difference influentials involved here, so for those purposes, I am stating that I use an iMac G5.

What maintenance should be performed on your Mac after a power failure?

I would run Disk Utility to verify disk and disk permissions are OK.

An fsck routine is performed automatically following any improper system shutdown the next time you boot (which is why that boot is always longer than normal) so, unless you specifically want to see the output, there is no need to use disk utility. FWIW.
