I perhaps made the mistake of unplugging my external HD several times without first dropping it into the basket.

Now the HD is lost. It is visible in the HD utility provided with OS X but it does not appear in the finder nor on the desktop and therefore I cannot access the content.

Data Recovery II can see the content but I am not sure if it would be actually able to copy the content to another HD.

Do you know another method how to access my HD again? Open source tools? Would it be advisable to go to a local Apple service specialist instead of purchasing a program which may not work at all?

Ciao Felix

Does Disk Utility allow you to repair it?

If it fails, what exactly does it say?

If Data Rescue can see the content, it can recover it. Do not use Disk Utility or Disk Warrior. If you do that, then you might damage your file system beyond repair. I've used Data Rescue on three occasions and it has worked twice flawlessly. The third time, it didn't work, because I hit repair in Disk Utility first.

Disk utility reportes an "unvalid volume-header". It repaired the volume with no error message, but it still does not appear on the desktop.

It is connected with FW800. Actually only one partition is defective on the drive, the second one. Would any other connection make a difference, FW 400, USB?

Data rescue II sees the content of the file. It seems to see everything, even after the repair attemps by the disk utility.

I had this problem once when my parents' Mac mini died. A faulty hub fried the motherboard and this, obviously, quite forcefully unmounted all of the volumes.

I took the backup drive and tried to repair it with Disk Utility. Not a good idea, it threw all the files away (it erased their names, Data Rescue could still recover them, but it would number the files).

Data Rescue makes a point of only reading from the damaged volume and to not touch it with any other software that writes on it. Now I know why.

I got the disk repaired with TechTools Pro 5 which I acquired practically for free in the MacUpdate Promo Bundle.

Very relieved... Felix
