Hi All,
I've been having trouble stopping "copy" and "delete" operations that have stalled (OSX 10.5.7).
I'm working with .mac (ok, mobileme) and trying to upload a folder with 400 items in it (it's the pages and image directory of a website). The copy operation stalled, and I had to not only restart the machine, but quit the Finder to do so. When the machine restarted, I then tried to delete that folder, and that delete operation has stalled as well (and no, clicking on the "x" button in the dialog box does not terminate the operation).
Looking in Activity Monitor, I can't see any obvious process to quit.
Any suggestions as to how to quit and then recover from this stalled process? (and not have to restart my machine?)
Thanks in advance,
Chas

Welcome to the dismal performance world of the Finder and iDisk which simply cannot handle large numbers of files being transferred to it using the Finder. The easiest thing to do to get rid of your files is avoid using the Finder altogether and to log-in to MobileMe in your browser, and access iDisk there to delete your files.
To copy large numbers of files using the Finder, you must do it in small batches rather than in one go. The best solution though is to use an alternative file transfer tool for accessing WebDAV-based servers (which is what iDisk is).

Hi JKT, many thanks for your reply.
The funny thing is, this is probably the 100th such site I've uploaded. Yes, I've had problems before, but never with such persistence.
Your advice to delete files from the browser is very helpful, thanks.
I'd be _more_ than happy to access my iDisk with an alternate client, but I don't even know what the address of my iDisk is (it's not like an ftp site where I'd have not problems finding out what the path is). Any ideas as to what the path would be, and can you recommend a good WebDAV capable transfer tool?
Of course, I'd _still_ like to be able to quit these stalled copy/delete processes (since my OP, I've restarted twice, trying coincidentally to upload smaller batches of files, but obviously not small enough).
Many thanks again,
Chas

Hi again JKT,
Just downloaded Transmit 3.6.7, which can connect to WebDAV servers (my old version was 2.6.2, which couldn't). A little Googling led me to an iDisk URL (sorry, last time I tried that particular search was a verry long time ago, and I didn't have any luck, which I guess made me think that there was no address and that the Finder was the only way to access the iDisk service).
Many thanks for the pointer, I'll happily leave behind the Finder for iDisk transfers!!! Now I wonder, will the Finder access the iDisk efficiently when upgraded with OSX 10.6?
Cheers!
Chas
