Was surfing on internet, when an ad for "Windows Security" popped up and said I had been infected with a Trojan virus, and needed to download "protection". I clicked to decline, but the add remained and the window won't close. I tried to shut the computer off, but Safari won't close. Did I inadvertantly give access to this virus when I clicked to decline? How do I take it off, or close the Safari window? I read that this is a common virus on Windows, but had not heard that it was infecting Macs? Any help would be appreciated!

No, don't worry DYM. Just press command-option-esc, select Safari and then press Force Quit. You can also access Force Quit from the Apple Menu (switch to another application if you're currently in Safari and can't click the Apple Menu), or by right-clicking Safari's dock icon and holding option down so that Quit changes to Force Quit.

The only way to get a Trojan is to download a piece of software and then choose to install it.

Don't sweat, you did nothing wrong. Those ads attempt to scare Windows users into either buying a crappy product or downloading malware from the ad, or both. You're protected from nearly all threats because you're a Mac user.

If you receive ANY "Windows" notification while surfing with a Mac, you can safely and even smugly ignore the dire warnings it provides. This is simply an underhanded and condescending way for advertisers to scare Windows users into buying something they don't need. Blocking Safari popups will keep you from seeing these shams and avoid being scared by them.

This is one of the big reasons I've enjoyed Macs since 1997.
