Your thread title mentions 10.6.1. Is that when this started? Download the full 75 MB 10.6.1 updater and install it. If that doesn't work, reset pram.

I just upgraded to 10.6.1 and am experiencing the same problem. I downloaded and installed the full installer and I reset PRAM, all to no avail. I'm running an early 2008 Mac Pro with 8 gigs of ram. I've never had this happen before. I, too, need some HELP!! Thanks.

Does it do this within a different OS X account on your computer?

SOLVED!

go to MacintoshHD-Library-Preferences-Audio- and take to the trash:

com.apple.audio.devicesettings.plist
com.apple.audio.systemsettings.plist

empty trash

put the volume UP

reestart and you are DONE!
