I double click a Word or Excel file and they open in Pages or Numbers, neither of which I want to use right now. If I right click and select open with or drag a file (Word or Excel) to the relevant app icon in the dock and first I get this:

then this

I'm running Microsoft Office 2004. Do I need to upgrade to 2007?

What is going on? I could really do with some help on this.

You need Rosetta to run Office 2004. Just install it - it won't hurt anything and will only take up about 3 MB.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

You need to either upgrade to 2007 or install Rosetta as it suggests.

2007 does not exist for Mac.

2008 is abomination.

2004 is PPC code.

Is there a reason you're afraid to install Rosetta?

There is no Office 2007 for the Mac, it's 2008. You don't need to upgrade necessarily. Office 2004 is PowerPC-based, but it runs perfectly reasonably on Intel machines (as you've experienced if you've been using it on the same Mac with Leopard). Office 2008 is Intel-native, but if you don't feel like spending the money, don't need 2008 features, or do need Visual Basic, stick with 2004. Also, now that you've installed Rosetta you won't have to do it again.

Thanks.

I wasn't sure about installing Rosetta only based on an irrational concern. But now I have and I can open the files I need to.

Would I get any benefits/a significant speed increase from upgrading to 2008?

Many people seem to hate 2008.

2008's probably better at reading those .docx and .xlsx files, although I think there's a module available for download somewhere that lets you read them with 2004.

I think 2004 is faster on an Intel Mac than 2008. Yes, there is an Office XML converter for 2004 at mactopia.com

I'm not a fan of 2004. Highlight two paragraphs, press delete: and wait two seconds until it finally happens.

Going to look into "Pages" or "Nisus Writer"/"Nisus Writer Pro".

Yes.

I bought 2008 since I got it for about $10 through my University. Now I use iWork 09.

From what I've heard, you'll be better off using OpenOffice.org or NeoOffice than Symphony, which is actually based on an old version of OOo.
