Do you know where I can change the browser default ?
currently links in Mail since links in there automatically opens them in Safari

went looking in 6 places for an answer
Spotlight
Mail help
Safari Help
Apple support
and Mac OSX Hints
none of the searches gave me anything remotely near it
and
from a google search this one is irrelevant for 10.6

then called a couple of buddies with one response
"You have to set the Firefox as default browser in the preferences of Firefox."

under General in Advanced there is only one option

tickbox "Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on start up" check now

If I change that in there, how do I change it back to Safari

Also is this only going to work after a computer Restart, every time ?

Until now I have believed that there be a System Preference for that. wouldn't you ?

Open Safari, click the Safari menu > Preferences > General tab. Choose your default browser.

It used to be easier. Up through 10.2, there was an Internet system prefs pane, which let you set default browser & email. Then Apple moved those prefs into their preferred email and browser applications, where they would be harder to find.

That really ticked my off a few months ago when I updated Webkit to the latest SVN and it decided that the new version required Safari 4, which my OS didn't support, and I couldn't change the default browser because I first needed to open Safari to do that... Stupid!!

You can use other web browsers to change the default browser choice. Most of them don't allow you change back to other browsers though.

Having it placed in the System Preference would be the better way to go IMO, but each browser that I have used allows me to make it the default browser. Only Safari and Camino allows me to choose other browsers. If you don't want to use Safari or Camino or can't open them for some reason then to change back and forth between different browsers being the default you have to manually do the check option when using the other browser. Once you do that it should stay as the default until you change it again. It's more inconvenient to do it that way but that's the way to do if you don't use Safari/Camino.
