Updated to 10.5.8 on my Feb 2007 20" iMac. Backed up everything before the upgrade, no issues there.
I have two external hard drives, one USB attached and one firewire 400. The iMac doesn't see the firewire drive any more.
I've followed this advice. No luck.
The disk worked before - I used it as part of the backups that I did.
Sys Profile has unknown device
Disk Utility doesn't see it. It sees the USB attached disque.
I have not been able to find any other solutions apart from the Apple support link above. Any ideas?

The combo updater is what I used in the first place. Should I try it again?

yes.
reapplying combo updater is one of the first steps to troubleshooting. It is easy, risk-free and potentially high-payoff.

OK, cheers for that info on the combo updater.
It didn't change anything for me unfortunately, still no firewire 400 attached drive.
I've even done a repair permissions, but no luck. I still have Apple Care, so I might just take it in.

Haven't tested that yet, will try and find my adapter for the French plugs and test tomorrow.
For info, its a Western Digital with the blue circle that flashes slowly - while plugged in to the mains supply the circle still flashes (which is what it does when the iMac is off).

I have two external hard drives, both WD, but one is about two years older than the other.
The newer one works with the older one's power supply. The older one, well its fussy.
No longer have a Firewire problem with 10.5.8, thankyou for taking the time to reply, sorry to have wasted your time.
