crazy iApps plists...

i'm seeing a lot of multiple plist files for some of my preferences, ie iApps, quicktime, itunes.
they look like this:
com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist.iHk7VBl
any idea what's causing this (and what to do about it)?
and what does it mean?
(I HAVE had to force-quit itunes periodically lately)...

What happens if you pull the duplicates out to your Desktop? Will new ones be made?
I've done that with some duplicates that I've found, and didn't notice any strange consequences. And no, new ones were not created.

Only if you assume that these AFAICT normal files are related to your unusual iTunes troubles.

this file:
com.apple.iPod.plist.Y53wHeQ
shows the exact same Created, Modified, and Last Opened time as com.apple.iPod.plist, but shows a file size of 0kb.
seems strange...
and this is from the last sync (as opposed to a crash)...
