... transferred all my data from my old MBP to my new 17in. Connected my external time machine drive expecting to either i) start a new backup or ii) trudge of to terminal to test the machine ID etc but NO. Time machine sparks up with, would you like to continue to use the existing backup?

Well done for fixing that stupid whole in TM functionality Apple.

That's great. I also noticed that restoring from TM backup now preserves the previous backups.

In the beginning, restoring from TM automatically lost all the previous backups. That was stupid.
