So here's a fun little tidbit. Time machine doesn't backup the contents of /var/spool/
OS X Server keeps all your IMAP accounts in /var/spool/
So if your raid is acting up and you decide to reformat and then restore from your backup . . . manually backup /var/spool first, unless you don't mind loosing 40,000 emails.

wow, apparently this goes back to at least 2007 when TM was part of Leopard.
Apple - Support - Discussions - /var/spool/imap and Time Machine ...

Is this what Apple recommends OS X Server users use?

The real kick in the balls is that I have a few very large folders specifically excluded. So when I was copying them off the drive, I easily could have also backed up /var/spool before reformatting, had I known. Time Machine also doesn't keep the default apache log folder, so apache won't start up after a restore either. But you just re-make that folder and it's fine. Luckily for me, I use nothing but IMAP, so right now I'm double-backing up all the mail in my client, then once i remake all my mail accounts, i'll just re-upload all my saved mail. A pain in the ass but at least I shouldn't lose anything. But wow what a huge, HUGE flaw.

It's not really a flaw when it's documented that you can't rely on Time Machine to fully backup a OS X Server boot drive.

Not for the server boot drive. Apple states throughout their server docs that Time Machine is not designed to backup various server functions.

What I would have expected. TM seems more marketed as a consumer oriented product, its overall design reflects this.

Well, I've never seen it in the Docs. I'm not saying I don't believe you, i'm just saying I, like probably most users, browse the docs for specific info when they are setting up specific services. I don't just read through the whole docs. But you know where would be a really great place to tell you that Time Machine isn't going to save your stuff on OS X Server?
