OS X Leopard install Panic(??)

Hi,
i finally decided to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard. The initial install went fine. I was at the initializing update phase of a software update when i closed the lid of my laptop (i just wasn't paying attention to what i was doing). My understanding is that the computer goes to sleep when the lid is closed. I reopened the lid and it didn't seem to wake from sleep and so i turned off the computer. Now whenever i turn it on i get what appears to be a kernal panic (i've never seen one before) and the screen says i have to restart my comp.
How do i resolve this issue?

Boot from the Leopard DVD and run the installer again.

Hi,
I tried to reinstall. It got to the "Leopard successfully installed" with the big check mark. It said to restart. after restarting it lead to the same kernal panic screen telling me to restart again.
A little more background: i'm using an external dvd to read the mac os x disc because the internal dvd isn't working. i don't know if that is a factor.
Maybe i should try installing Tiger?

do you have a backup? If so, I'd do an erase-install, then copy your stuff over later from the backup. Just nuke the whole destination drive and start fresh. By default Leopard will do an 'upgrade' install, which isn't always good at resolving corrupted installer/OS issues.

Unfortunately i do not have a backup. One of the reasons i wanted Leopard is Time Machine.
Can i replace the existing HD(1) with another HD(2), install Leopard on the new HD(2)and then connect the original HD(1) thru and external enclosure and copy my files over to the new HD(2)?
i have been considering and upgrade in HD for a while anyhow.

The hard drive could have been damage when you did a hard shutdown. You can try booting up from the DVD by holding down the C key and use Disk Utility to repair any hard drive problems.

It should work by using migration assistant if HD(1) hasn't been damaged and is unreadable.

hey,
Merry xmas all. i was able to install Tiger. All of my old files are on the space called "previous system". Do i use migration assistant to get all my files and applications on to my "current system"?

You installed Tiger back onto your original hard drive? The one you were trying to upgrade to Leopard? I could be wrong but it sounds like you did an archive and install which is why you are seeing a previous system. If I'm correct then all our files are already on your computer so you don't need to do a migration assistant. I believe you just have to copy the old files over to your current user profile.
