The way this was possible in Leopard, once selecting all required files hold command and drag and drop to new location, this doesn't work in Snow Leopard ?

Anyone know ?

works for me. SL 10.6.2. Could you be moving from a device or share where you don't have permissions to remove the current copies?

No. Well it doesn't work for me. 10.6.2. Just Tried it again. Selected all files pressed command put mouse on one file and as soon as I pressed the mouse on one file it unlighted itself from the list while the rest remained highlighted ?

highlight the files you want, then drag to the move location. But before releasing the mouse, press command. The + sign should go away, indicating a move.

Well that didn't work either, but I discovered, keeping the Shift key depressed and moving all the files worked. I therefore didn't even need to depress the command key.

Thanks for your help on this, but it maybe wort noting that there didn't appear to be any Help at all with regard to this in the Apple Help Menu !

Holding command while selecting items lets you select non-continuous items. Holding shift forces you to select continuous items (i.e. in the order that they are in in a list). At this point, it has nothing to do with how the command or copy will occur. You're just deciding what files to select.

After starting the drag and then holding the command (or option or shift+command), then you are deciding how the move, copy, or alias is to occur, respectively. The key (so to speak) is holding the key(s) *after* you start the drag.

Thank you Steve, but when moving files within a drive Shift is the only key I need hold down. But when moving files between drives no amount of key selections will work whilst moving files! I can only do it one at a time it seems, until I read otherwise.

Either something with your finder is broken, or you're doing something completely wrong.

You can certainly drag multiple files between drives.

Well, in Leopard, that doesn't happen. (My bad. I missed the fact that you mentioned pressing the Command key. See the next post...) I'd be surprised if SL changed that. To get all highlighted items to no longer be highlighted, I click anywhere in the Finder Window. Maybe your com.apple.finder.plist file is corrupt.

Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Yonkers can have better TV reception.

I have no idea what everybody is going on about: What you describe is *exactly* what is supposed to happen, and is how file selection has worked for AT LEAST fifteen years (not entirely sure about System 7.6 and earlier).

If you have a bunch of files selected, holding down the Cmd key and clicking on any of the files will DEselect that file, and do nothing else.

Cmd-click it again, and it will REselect the file.

If you want to select individual files, say, the first, and the third, the fourth, fifth, and the eighth, you click the first one to select it, then hold down the Cmd-key and click on the others to select them.

To move/copy them anywhere, LET GO OF ALL KEYS, click and hold on any of the selected files, and drag them where you want them to go.

What people are confusing you with is the fact that pressing Cmd or Option (Alt) AFTER YOU HAVE STARTED DRAGGING THE FILES TO THEIR DESTINATION will change the behavior of the drag.
By default, dragging stuff elsewhere on the same disk will MOVE it there. Dragging stuff to another disk will COPY it there. Holding down Cmd or Option WHILE DRAGGING (not when clicking to drag) will switch these behaviors.

I see no mention in your posts of moving stuff to other drives, so I really don't understand why people are bringing it up.

Unless you're reading "within" and "between" differently than I am.

ah, you appear to be correct.

Still, I can't help thinking this is a misunderstanding.

I agree. Something here is wonky.
